Concept Design Stage Tasks - Generating Ideas

#1
Interior Design Fundamental
Design Language
Tasks
  • Task 1.1 Client Identity.
  • Task 1.2 Moodboard.
  • Task 1.3 Site Location.
  • Task 1.4 Client Needs.
  • Task 1.5 Accommodation Schedule.
  • Task 1.6 Project Description.

What is a Design Language?

Design Language is the creation of an appropriate mood and atmosphere that relates to the Client’s unique identity and particular needs. Interior Design Evolution has a simple definition:

Client Identity & Needs + The Look, Style, Mood of a Place = Design Language

What will I learn?

The Concept Design Stage it is all about generating Design Ideas. You will begin with learning how to investigate your Client’s unique identity and particular needs. This will allows you to gather a range of materials, colours, textures, furniture, objects, lighting, etc. to create a coherent Moodboard with an appropriate look, style and mood. A key question is always, ‘How Does It Make Me Feel?’, so Design Language focuses on generating appropriate Design Ideas that will allow your Client to flourish in their new interior habitat.

How will this knowledge benefit me as an Interior Designer?

Creating a successful, project-specific Design Language is Interior Design Fundamental #1, this is your first big step to thinking and working like an Interior Designer. The knowledge to produce a clear Design Language allows Interior Designers to translate Client identity and needs into a coherent mood, atmosphere and spatial expression that lays the foundations that effectively guides every decision that follows.

#2
Interior Design Fundamental
Design Strategy
Tasks
  • Task 1.7 Bubble Diagram.
  • Task 1.8 Host Building Analysis.
  • Task 1.9 Zoned Plans.
  • Task 1.10 Sketch Model.

What is a Design Strategy?

Design Strategy is the where your Design Ideas merge with the realities of the specific place that will ‘host’ your proposed design. Interior Design Evolution has a simple definition:

Host Building Analysis + Your Design Ideas = Design Strategy

What will I learn?

You will begin with learning how to rigorously analysis the main features and characteristics of the Host Building and Site: light, views, materials, surfaces, character, etc. You will build on, and test, the Design Ideas you established in Design Language by learning how to: translate the Client’s needs into coherent, spatial diagrams; create accurate planned arrangements of the activities, functions and spaces; and explore three-dimensional opportunities with quick and messy physical models that further explore the key question of, ‘How Does It Make Me Feel?’.

How will this knowledge benefit me as an Interior Designer?

Creating a successful, project-specific Design Strategy is Interior Design Fundamental #2, this is your second big step to thinking and working like an Interior Designer. The knowledge to produce a clear Design Strategy allows Interior Designers to read existing buildings to appropriately remodel them by embedding a set of new, coherent Client-focused Design Ideas into their fabric. A clearly communicated Design Strategy allows Clients, or tutors, to understand your process and logic, this builds trust and will also look great in your Portfolio.

Concept Design Submission and Feedback: Written feedback issued within 2-weeks of submission.
Stage 2

Scheme Design Stage Tasks - Developing Ideas

#3
Interior Design Fundamental
Objects, Space, Experience
Tasks
  • Task 2.1 How Does It Make Me Feel?
  • Task 2.2 Working with Scale.
  • Task 2.3 Technical Drawing - Plan.
  • Task 2.4 Technical Drawing - Elevations & Section.
  • Task 2.5 Technical Drawing - Axonometric.
  • Task 2.6 Technical Drawing - One Point Perspective.
  • Task 2.7 Sketch Model - Host Building Enclosure.
  • Task 2.8A, B & C Sketch Development of Objects, Space, Experience.
  • Task 2.8D Technical Development of Objects, Space, Experience.

What is Objects, Space, Experience?

Objects, Space, Experience is the core skillset of an Interior Designer, it is where you develop your Design Ideas into a scaled, technically drawn design proposal with an appropriate mood and atmosphere. Interior Design Evolution has a simple definition:

Object + Space = Experience

What will I learn?

The Scheme Design Stage it is all about developing your Design Ideas. You will learn how to master how objects come together in light to create space, and how that space makes us feel something (physiologically and psychologically). Again, by focusing on ‘How Does It Make Me Feel?’, you will learn to adjust each object and each spaces materiality (surfaces, colour, texture, etc.) to develop and hone a desired mood and atmosphere, and then test this through scaled technical drawings and models will allow your to create accurate and ultimately buildable design proposals.

How will this knowledge benefit me as an Interior Designer?

Utilising Objects, Space, Experience to create appropriate places for experience is Interior Design Fundamental #3, this is your third big step to thinking and working like an Interior Designer. The knowledge of how to develop a place with a particular mood and atmosphere, and accurately deliver a scaleable design proposal, is at the core of what professional Interior Designers do to design experiences for the any space, function and activity (live, work, rest, play, interact, etc.) that we inhabit.

Scheme Design Submission and Feedback: Written feedback issued within 2-weeks of submission.
Stage 3

Communication Design Stage Tasks - Communicating Ideas

#4
Interior Design Fundamental
Visual Language
Tasks
  • Task 3.1 Develop Design Document Visual Language.
  • Task 3.2 Front Cover - Project Description.
  • Task 3.3 Host Building Analysis Diagrams.
  • Task 3.4 Design Ideas Diagrams.
  • Task 3.5 Moodboard.
  • Task 3.6 Scaled, Technical Drawings - Plan/s, Section/s & Axonometric/s.
  • Task 3.7 3D Visual/s.
  • Task 3.8 Physical Model.
  • Task 3.9 Final Design Document Visual Language (incorporate your Continuous Studio Exploration).
  • Task 3.10 End of Project Evaluation.

What is Visual Language?

Visual Language is concerned with the creation of a final Design Document that reflects the Design Language, Design Strategy and Object Space Experience of your project. Interior Design Evolution has a simple definition:

Your Project’s Brand / Identity + Your Project’s Design Document = Visual Language

What will I learn?

The Communication Design Stage it is all about communicating all your Design Ideas. You will learn how to produce finalised design information (project description, diagrams, scaled technical drawings, 3D visuals and spatial physical models) that are consistent with the Client’s specific brand, identity, look and style. You will learn how to bring all this design information together onto a series of pages to produce a Design Document that visually communicates all the physical and psychological aspects of your final project. Each Design Document page will consider: Template; Layout; Graphics; Fonts; Colours; etc.

How will this knowledge benefit me as an Interior Designer?

Creating a successful, project-specific Visual Language is Interior Design Fundamental #4, this is your fourth big step to thinking and working like an Interior Designer. The knowledge of producing a clear Visual Language allows Interior Designers to bring all the project information together into a clear, graphically arranged final Design Document. Your Design Document will form a big part of your Design Portfolio so you showcasing the skills that Clients, Employers, Tutors and Contractors trust and respect.
